Description: Meet sweet Denver. Denver comes to Pug Rescue from a shelter in LA, we were called to come get him right away as he was scheduled for euthanasia that evening. Denver showed up at the shelter with a broken pelvis, and they did not have the resources to care for him, so it was essential that we get to him right away. Unfortunately, because he was a stray, Denver had already been sitting in the shelter for the required six days before we were called to come get him. Six days with no treatment, no pain medication, laying on a concrete floor. Poor little guy. One of our dedicated volunteers went and rescued Denver as soon as she was called, and she says he was frightened and trembling uncontrollably as she very carefully carried him out. His little paws clutched her arm, surely grateful for help. Denver was quiet during the three hour ride to the emergency hospital, where he was taken for immediate veterinary care that evening. It was originally assumed that Denver was hit by a car, but upon examination, he showed no other cuts, abrasions, no road rash, just a badly broken pelvis. The doctors believe he has been kicked or hit. None of us can imagine striking a dog hard enough to break his pelvis, but it happened to Denver. Denver did not have surgery, but instead will need four months of cage rest, many sets of x-rays to ensure that he is healing properly, and close monitoring of his activity to make sure he doesn't put any stress or strain on his pelvis. Denver is expected to make a full recovery and will lead a normal, happy, pain free life once he is healed. He is now in the care of a loving foster family who is showering him with cuddles and attention. He is currently resting comfortably, with soft blankets and beds, and surrounded by humans who adore and love him. He is a very sweet boy, and has been very appreciative of the attention lavished on him. Denver likes other dogs, and would do well in a home where he has lots of company, human and canine. He LOVES to eat, so his meals must be measured and monitored, no free feeding for this guy! Denver should not go to a home with small children, as he is not fond of them. Granted, when he met a toddler, he was in an xpen and likely in pain, but his reaction to her was strong enough that we don't feel comfortable placing him in a home with young children. Denver also is still working on his house training, and has been wearing a belly band indoors in his foster home. Update 8/11/10 - Denver has been released to "moderate activity" and will be allowed to play around the house and take very short walks outside. His pelvis is doing well, but we will be watching closely to make sure he doesn't over do it. Update 8/23/10 - Denver is now allowed to play a bit around the house, and enjoys playing tug with his foster Pug siblings. He is doing very well, is no longer on any meds, and does not need to be confined. He probably shouldn't go to the dog park anytime soon, and no agility for a while, but he is doing just great with normal every day activities. Denver is ready to find his forever family, so if you think you can offer Denver his dream home, where he will never again have to worry about being hurt on purpose, please contact us to learn how you can meet him. 9/13/10 - Denver's forever family didn't work out so he is now available for adoption again. |
