Description: We'd like to introduce you to little Pebbles, currently the tiniest
baby in Pug Rescue, but surely one of the bravest. Pebbles came to Pug
Rescue in mid-December, from a home that knew she had problems that
they could not care for. She was just nine weeks old when she came to
us. Pebbles has a very crooked spine, and we took her in, hoping that
we would be able to find a way to help her. Some surgery or treatment
that would allow her to have a normal, long, healthy life.
Sadly, that is not to be. Pebbles was diagnosed with severe scoliosis
from hemivertebrae, and the only thing we can do for her is love her,
and make her life as happy and comfortable as possible while she is
with us. For now, she behaves much like a normal puppy, but she is very, very small for her age. She has a very narrow trachea, which makes breathing very difficult for her. Her foster mom pushes upwards on her chest three or four times a day to help push her ribcage outward, so she can breathe easier, but this will only provide temporary relief. Eventually, the neurological problems associated with this disease will become apparent, and breathing will become
impossible for this sweet little girl.
Pebbles is absolutely thriving on all the attention she receives in her foster home. Michelle, one of our special needs foster parents, saw Pebbles' picture and her heart told her she needed to care for this sweet
girl, no matter the outcome. Pebbles snuggles in Michelle's arms when she
isn't busy playing and pulling her socks off her foster mom's feet. Right now, Pebbles is just
a normal pug puppy - playful and loving. Michelle reports that Pebbles
cuddles next to face each night and sleeps soundly throughout the night.
Michelle says, "I hope all the love and attention she gets from our family
extends her time. We love her."
For as long as she has, Pebbles will be lovingly cared for by her
foster family and everyone at Pug Rescue. When she starts having pain,
we will help her over the Rainbow Bridge, and she will know that she
was loved as much as a baby Pug can be loved. Pebbles is currently here on
the Available page so we can share her story, though she is not available for adoption. Update 5/22/11 - Pebbles has amazed us all with her strength and amazing personality. We were told in December that she had perhaps two to four weeks to live before life would just become too painful for her. And, here she is, almost six months later, playing and enjoying life. We are so happy that she's doing so well! Update 6/16/11 - Pebbles is doing so well that it has been decided that she will be made available for adoption to the right family. Our vet says that Pebbles' spine could straighten out more, but will not get worse. We still cannot predict how long her life will be, but she's already amazed everyone with her zest for life and determination to enjoy every second of it. Pebbles would need a home where someone is frequently home, as she is a social and bubbly girl. She loves to play with other dogs and ideally wants canine siblings, but must be in a home where all the other dogs are altered. Pebbles is NOT spayed due to her condition. Anesthesia is just not an option for her right now. Pebbles loves to cuddle, but you must be very careful when picking her up, and pressure on the wrong places causes her pain. Pebbles has proven herself to be a resilient, amazing little dog, if you think you could provide a home for her, contact us to learn how to meet this little gem.
New Beginning:A wonderfuly, Pug loving family came to adopt Isis, one of our sweet girls that is missing an eye, and while they were meeting Isis, little Pebbles managed to charm them with kisses! They absolutely fell in love with both girls, and adopted Isis and Pebbles together! Not only is it a wonderful home and a perfect fit for two of our special needs babies, Pebbles and Isis adore each other and they are so glad to stay together! Congrats all around!
